Peace Studies - Professor Ian Harris, UW-Milwaukee

Ian Harris has spent 32 years as part of the faculty of the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. He started by teaching a selection of Education courses, but found his home specializing as a Peace Studies instructor. Ian has guided students through all the multiple levels and phases of Peace Studies over the last few decades, preparing his students to make a much-needed difference in the world through their active, engaged Peace Work. Ian was raised Episcopal but has been a Quaker, a member of Milwaukee Friends Meeting, since the mid-1980’s.

There was powerful impetus to look for options for peace when President Reagan was rattling nuclear sabres, but Ian Harris also has strong personal motivation based on his sense of family responsibility.
There are at least two camps of philosophy of the "best" motivations for doing peace work - spiritual or secular outlooks both being common in the field.
Peace can be pursued at many levels - international, national, community and individually.
Ian starts out his Peace Studies classes with a few exercises to get his students sharing their own experiences of violence.
Everyone, including the War College, has a vested interest in the necessary building blocks to peace in Iraq, and Ian shares some of the steps needed.
