I've listened to this broadcast a number of times gaining insight about the artist and the music he creates. The program is peaceful and offers a perspective that enlightens my soul and heightens my sensitivity to other avenues of spirituality.

Song Of The Soul -Susan Stark's Song of the Soul
I forgot to mention... the program I was referring to and enjoyed so much was Song of the Soul, interview with Susan Stark, which aired in August, 2009 (which I found today!). Thanks for such a great website and radio station, please come to AZ soon, we need more progessive thinkers here like you all seem to be! God help us, perhaps some day this state will "see the light"... we do have 2 Quaker Meetings in the Phoenix area and several peace activist groups, believe it or not!

Song Of The Soul -Susan Stark's Song of the Soul
Yes, I also just listened to your interview with Susan Stark today...I just found your podcasts and website today... WOW, what a great radio station and service you are providing! I wish I could hear your programs live, but I live in AZ (ok, no comments please about SB1070... our racist immigration law, I agree it's a horrible thing and yes, Sheriff Joe needs to be run out of town!). Anyway, it was so great to hear Susan's beautiful voice again and learn more about her story as a singer-songwriter. I haven't seen her for over 25 years when she and I lived at Olney Friends School back in 1983-4 where I taught music, so your podcast has now enabled me to get back in touch with Susan after all these years! Thanks so much, Namaste to all!

Song Of The Soul -Ari Herstand's Song of the Soul
I feel so very grateful to Mark for choosing Ari in his Song of the Soul radio podcast! The questions were so very thought provoking. The comments of his long time friendship to Ari's parents, especially his father. Ari's voice sounded fabulous over the computer. Best quality I have heard over the airwaves! I liked it so much that I chose to "share" the link on my facebook page with a note that I hoped they tuned in also! I loved the entry song- "Song of the Soul" You are doing wonderful work, and I feel so very grateful that you are in my world. Shabbat Shalom- Today is Friday- Shabbat begins at sundown tonight!

Song Of The Soul -Tom Allen's Song of the Soul
This was a great interview. I found Mr. Allen's songs and musical compositions delightful and uplifting. I especially enjoyed what he had to say about his involvement with Transcendental Meditation and how he was helping to establish World Peace through practice of the program. I hope to hear more of his songs in the future. Helene Darisse

Song Of The Soul -Andy Murray's Song of the Soul
A great program. I stumbled on to it by "googling" Andy Murray to see if he had any songs recorded for the internet and found this web-site. I have known Andy and Terry for over over 30 years. I also play the guitar and learned to play in grade school, listened to a lot of Chet Atkins records, and also classical guitarist, Segovia. I'll need to tie into NSR again!

I would highly recommend the show for the background it provides and enthusiastically endorse the CD. Beautiful work Rod!!

Spirit In Action -Awakening Universe, Emerging Personhood - Mary Conrow Coelho
Mark, Congratulations on the interview with Mary C Coelho! This is the first time I've heard her voice, and I am grateful for that added dimension. I've just finished listening to it, and I'm offering superficial responses. I hope I'll have more to offer later. Since we met at Session, I've had a chance to get into discussions with several members of meeting (6-10) who have read the book or have tried to. All but two have said they find the book difficult, many find it daunting. Listening to Mary, especially some of the occasions when she was reading from the book, I had that experience myself. I immediately "explained" it as "well, those sentences were written to be read, not heard; they are too dense to be assimilated in a single pass, as when one is only hearing them once." That "explanation" is probably a good one, but I think, additionally, Mary's presentation, what she offers us, is dense. As an undergraduate I had trouble reading math texts, because --I came to understand-- I had a preconception of not spending more than 15 minutes on a single page. Some of the stuff I was reading required an hour on two facing pages, and if I hadn't turned a page after 30 minutes I felt stuck, bogged down. Personally, I get giddy, reading AWAKENING UNIVERSE EMERGING PERSONHOOD, but in conversation with others in my meeting I have come to understand that is because I have immersed myself in the authors she addresses, for years. Like somebody who understands most of the math concepts being presented, the pages don't seem TOO packed with material.

Spirit In Action -Amy DeLong - Kairos CoMotion
Your interview with Amy 3 years ago is an important marker in the on-going history of The United Methodist Church and sexuality in general - in this case that of gay men and lesbians. Amy talked about the potential of a trial and it appears that is about to happen. Thank you for the good questions you asked of an articulate responder. That combination has and will spark growth the life of both individuals and institutions.

Another inspiring interview with an important Quaker voice. Alivia's faith journey is moving; her conversion story especially spoke to me. She also has a beautiful, clear voice that conveys the presence of the Divine in her own words and music and the interpretation of others'. This is an interview I'll return to, so I've downloaded it on my iPod.

Song Of The Soul -Peter Phippen's Song of the Soul
Hi Mark, I live in england and was sent the link to this show by an Estonian friend. I would like to say that quite apart from the wonderful music played by Peter, I was struck by the warmth and intelligence of your presentation - the friendly approach that was able to draw great insights from him. Indeed it was like two dear friends talking in a pleasant unhurried way and made me envious that there is nothing quite like this in england. Perhaps one day when I amass a little more music of my own I may find myself at the happy place of being interviewed by yourself. Wonderful. Best Regards, Les Wilson

Song Of The Soul -Mike Hamer's Song of the Soul
Mike Hamer is connected to his soul. His music is centered and has great respect for himself and for his community of listeners. Mike works to embrace differences in a way that is refreshing. He is attuned to the Great Spirit at work within each living being. His work is fresh and vital to the community. Listening to him provides one with time to play, to be sensual, to be nostalgic and to promote healing within. He is a true blessing both to the wheelchair bound and to the persons who are able to walk and to run. Mike's light is a testimony to the richness within his soul and spirit. Just cannot put anymore words into this space that tells you the love for this special human being.

David,I appreciate so much knowing how you came to write these songs. The last song carried the beauty of looking up at the incredible wonder of the night sky even without words. And your quote about being in a joyful state realizing we cannot comprehend the Mystery resonated with me 100%. So eloquently said. It is wonderful that you can share your soul with the world through your creative work. Your gifts bring Light and healing energy to the planet and I am happy to know you are being recognized. Thank you and bless you in all of your inspired creations!

I listened to this segment because I had first met Jon Nelson in 1981 when he was a park ranger in Quetico (and then again in Thunder Bay last autumn on my way to my most recent canoe trip to Quetico). He is a fascinating person and has produced an excellent book on the park. This was a very good interview; I thoroughly enjoyed it. (The digression on health care was also very interesting; Jon explained the Canadian system very well).

Song Of The Soul -Mike Hamer's Song of the Soul
Great interview and wonderful to hear Mike talking so much about himself and then playing his music. Brought me back to Greenville days when Mike's music was the heart and soul of a community --definitely brought it all back home. Loved the way he reminded us of Annie Dillard's mysticism, his myth classes and telling now of going back to church. Full circle. Loved hearing about trying a new musical instrument not just for the fun of it but also the therapy, never defeated by his physical ills and even now finding ways to make more and better music when physical limits assailed him. Most of all it was great to hear about his undying love for the world and that beautiful eastern North Carolina swampland, the Tar River by his back doorstep and the sweet blackwater creeks where good friends still paddle him around among the cypress trees and blue herons. Mike and his music are a part of many lives. Lucky am I to be one of them. Amy Hannon, Clinton, NJ

I really like the sound of both voices being heard and was impressed by both the type of questions and also the responses Michael Robins gave...it seems to be resonating that his experience is an awakeing to us also. Having spoken to Michael myself now, I feel that there is truth in what not only he says, but the power in which broadcasts out of him in a form of LOVE. Thanks to both of you for your passion and path that is leading others inwards and resonating out. Peace Michael

Song Of The Soul -Mike Hamer's Song of the Soul
Mark, Thank you for bringing us the wonderful spirit and music of Mike Hamer. He taught me guitar some 40 years ago with the utmost patience and good humor, and I remember fondly the days of playing music with him. Whatever the venue: bars, coffehouses, nursing homes, or girl scout meeings, and whomever the audience - from the most disconsolate drunk to the most irrepressible kid, Mike brought an incredible joie de vivre and ability to connect, and was always looking to dissolve that stuff that holds us back from one another. And he's been doing that with his music for over half a century! Rock on, my man!

Song Of The Soul -Warren Petryk's Song of the Soul
Inspirational, beautiful, brilliant, God-filled! Perhaps this is a biased evaluation as I treasure Warren as a personal friend. While listening meditatively to his words and his music, I couldn't help reliving many of the memories I have shared with the Memories, especially Warren, with whom I have spent many unforgettable hours over the years. His person and his music have always been an inspiration to me--whether we were discussing the place of God in our lives or watching the Gandhi video together, or just enjoying the range of his tenor as he and his friends shared themselves with us decades ago in Aberdeen, South Dakota, my hometown. I miss him and will never forget how willing he was to share his gift of music, his time and energy, and the love of God with this elderly Benedictine nun. Everyone whose life he has touched has profited by the experience. Thank you for having him on your radio show and giving us the opportunity of sharing it on the internet. I loved it all! May God reward him and you.

It is always a pleasure to hear Tom and his music! It makes me want to sing, dance, laugh, and to stand up and take more actions on Peace,Social Justice and Environmental issues! We have known each other through protesting the Bangor nuclear submarine base, Fellowship of Reconciliation (MLK,jr joined this pacifist organ. 12/06/58, 2 days after I was born), Seattle Folklife Festival, taking the photograph on his first album, producing Bill Staines concerts, and attending a recording session on an album. Song Of The Soul -Tom Rawson's Song of the Soul
An inspiring program that left me smiling, singing, crying, and full of hope. Tom's stories of his spiritual journey and how he uses music to promote peace and justice are affirming of the value of the creative spirit in such efforts. Plus it sounds like he has lots of fun! I also appreciated learning more about the songs, song-witers, and Tom's philosophy about performing music. Mark asked insightful questions, and Tom was eloquent in his responses. I'll listen again (and buy some of Tom's CDs) when I need a lift.

Song Of The Soul -Tom Rawson's Song of the Soul
HI, I don't know if my comment was actually sent, so I'm repeating it' I love Tom Rawson. I enjoyed your program featuring him very much and thought that you did him justice in your interview, showing your radio audience what a fine man he is in every way. Pat Carfra Victoria, B.C. Canada p.s. Chris Williamson does a great job on the old song, your theme song, 'Song of the Soul'. The last time I heard it was when my 96 year old aunt sang it to me over the phone with great gusto. Does she have it on a CD? I couldn't find that info on her website. Thanks

I may be prejudiced, since Lise Abazs is my niece. I liked David the moment I met him, and found the boys (as quite young ones, when I saw them) to be unusually nice, and talented. This interview kept me listening to the end. Well done! What great work that family has been doing for 20 years - puts the rest of us to shame.

Hello! I was given one of his albums b y Bob & Betty McInnes, and enjoyed it then, but now even more knowing some of the background and history! I'm 67, an ex-pat from the USSA [not a typo] in 1969, and now live near Victoria, BC All best, Joseph PS: The colours of the code box make it impossible to read.... I like what your show is doing and I like that you found out about Tom Rawson. I used to be in a folk singing group with Tom called The Raging Zephyr in Seattle area and he was a driving force in that group with his wonderful musical and singing ability and the fine songs he brought to our performances. I have also heard him perform throughout Washington state and he gives a top notch show and has a sincerely good heart and mission. I am so happy to know Tom and will continue to attend his shows.

Song Of The Soul -Tom Rawson's Song of the Soul
I loved this interview with Tom Rawson. I know Tom as a friend and musical comrade, and I have been to some of his concerts and own his CDs. I loved listening to him talk about the reasons he selected each song he played here. They do represent his community and nature-centered heart and soul. For Tom, there is not much distinction between doing good caring work in the world and being "spiritual". This is my first encounter with the format for this show, which I really like, by the way.

Song Of The Soul -Bruce Hecksel's Song of the Soul
This program is new to me. It came to me from being on Patchouli's listserve and I'm so grateful. Hearing Bruce's journey and his freedom to pursue what he loves is very healing to me. I love the idea of ministering through music. It seems many of us brought up in the '50s and '60s were boxed in by a rather conservative stricture. Even though loving, it could bring a judgmental atmosphere which was easy to take on as baggage. Thank you, Bruce, Mark and Julie for bringing that joyful, loving sense of forgiveness.

Spirit In Action -Holistic Development Mission in Rwanda - Debby Thomas
I can relate to these young missionaries because they are Quakers and their spiritual perspective. It has much more meaning to me, personally. I loved listening to their involvement with the local agriculture. I agree that it's best to teach someone to fish than to provide fish. Teaching empowers people. My own personal belief is that teaching someone about the spirit within us all is the ultimate empowerment. Conversely, teaching that God is outside and requires a third party for salvation is the ultimate enslavement.

Spirit In Action -Fit For Freedom, Not For Friendship - Donna McDaniel and Vanessa Julye
I am an English Friend based in the UK. I am reading this book at the moment. Its great that Donna and Vanessa have done all the work to get this VERY important book out there. I have always been suspicious of the holier than thou attitude that crops up again and again among Friends. Recently I suggested we get a copy of this book for our Quaker meeting library but was told it was not an appropriate book as it was about American Friends. I reminded people that most early Friends who went to the US were English! It is our history too. Having attended Meetings in the US, I have found little difference in attitudes among white Friends regarding reasons why Black people are not among us or are so few. The same goes for working class people. The patterns described are the same or very similar as described in the book. This work will serve the cause of anti racist Friends in the UK as much as in the US. It is a very very important myth buster...Your interview was very good. Thankyou for your inspiration. I will definately stay tuned from afar

Spirit In Action -Injustice in Latin America & In The Church: Father Roy Bourgeois, SOA Watch Founder
Dear Spirit In Action (certainly preferable to spirit inaction), Thank you for including my music in your podcast last week, in your interview with Fr. Roy. Here are a couple of good reasons it's always a good idea to contact the artist: First, I've added orchestration to the recording since it first came out, and fixed a couple of things that were annoying me. I would have been happy to send you a wav file of the latest version. Second, my name is pronounced "ben AH-vrahm" (son of Abraham.) However, wonderful interview, and I feel honored to have been a small part of it. For you listeners who would like to hear the later version, here's a link, and it includes a link to another version where it is in a medley with another song, one I wrote at the beginning of the Gulf War ("From the jungles of Central America to the deserts of the Middle East, Empire marches on ...." www.Lagrimas.ws/lagrimas_candle.htm By the way, the recording is part of a larger work, "Metanoia -- a Universalist Mass", a musical call for radical transformation and social justice. YOu may hear a sampling at: http://www.MetanoiaMass.com/SacredJazzSampler_09.htm, and, should you wish to contact me, my e-mail address is Daniel@PeaceHost.net. Peace, Daniel Zwickel ben Avram

One of the best concerts Ed and I ever attended was Johnny Clegg in Madison on Halloween, 1992. Essay & Thoughts -Free From Hell
I'll toss my 2-cents-worth here in about Lawrence's comments - I appreciate the feedback. While I don't expect that Lawrence will agree with me, I can provide ample evidence of my statements. One of statements that Lawrence apparently ignored, is that the Bible contains statements on both sides. In other words, in some places it implies that NO ONE will go to hell, and in other places (more popular for hell-fire and damnation oriently preachers) it definitely refers to people going to hell. The Bible is NOT of one mind on this issue. There's a lot more to be said, but the essay was limited to 800 words, for my local paper. If you want a full, thoughtful, careful treatment of the topic, read Gulley & Mulholland's books, "If Grace is True" and "If God is Love" - my comments are a weak echo of what they have to say. And I thank you again, Lawrence Felip, for your comments, and I promise to be as faithful to God's Word as I am able. Mark Helpsmeet

And then I went to Rwanda and had my heart filled, remembering Florence who talked to North Pacific Yearly Meeting about HROC last summer. I could go on and on. Then, of course there is Song of the Soul.....I DID wonder what had ever happened to Claudia Schmidt! Now I know! I had heard a few of Susan Werner's songs before and always wondered about her. And I am learning about so many others....thank you for this rich, deep work you are doing and for enabling me to add so much to my daily tasks!!! Can't wait to hear more and more..... Essay & Thoughts -Free From Hell
Wow. just Wow. Do you even believe in Jesus? Your article assumes second guessing the Lord, do you know how dangerous this is? Especially if the unsaved take your point of view seriously. The main reason most people who follow Jesus "get it" ,(meaning what the Bible means in scripture) is through the Holy Spirit, who gives us discernment. The Lord loves completely, and he has a completely opposite plan for those who reject him. You cannot attempt to understand the Lords' plan/intentions in human terms- far from it. We live by faith and trust in Him, regardless of our human reservations. Allow yourself to trust COMPLETELY in the Lord. It will Indeed set you free. The Spirit does seem to be within you my brother. Using your secular "rationalism" will always send you in the right direction. Choose which promises to believe? Wow. I'll seriously ask the Spirit to speak with you my friend.

Hi, Mark- I ran into Magic Mama yesterday, just after your Song of the Soul show was broadcast. Small world. Beautiful people. Of course, I think it's "best" because I'm one of those interviewed. I do want to thank Mark for asking great questions and, best of all, leaving time enough to answer them without having to talk as fast as possible! To have such time is a gift and it produced a very fair and full program about our work. Thank you, Mark, and those who spend the time listening.

Essay & Thoughts -A Cover to Match the Book: Finding the Israel in Your Jacob
Great essay, Mark. I also feel there is something more in a name. We can either pick a new name or look in a different manner at the one we have. My last name is Schaefer. It means shepherd. I have been examining this name for years. My daughter is an artist and drew a picture of a shepherd with sheep and with calligraphy wrote SCHAEFER under the picture. It means very much to me on many levels. My confirmation name is James. I actually took it because the bishop who confirmed me was named James and we shared a birthday. Perhaps a shallow reason but the spirit has guides me to hold the name James in the Light and discern that the author of James wrote about social justice and righteousness. Thanks for all you do.

Thank you so much for having the forsight to interview Bonnie and the thoughtfulness to make it available at this time of great sorrow. As you must know, she was killed on July 2nd in a bicycle accident, hit by a dump truck, in Virginia while attending Friends General Conference. It is a great comfort to her family and friends to hear her tell her story in this marvellous interview. Thank you again.P

What an amazing interview! Thank you! I may ask to play it at our next Prospect Hill Friends Mtg's "3rd Friday!" so that we'll have time to listen and discuss. I want these local Quakers, most of whom haven't been to FGC or FLGBTQ events to have a chance to experience Bonnie's clear leadings and actions, and her influence on the world.

I am a colleague and friend of Bonnie. We have known and worked together since the early 1990's. Together we travelled the country leading the LARA (speech as non violence) workshops. This interview is a gem; It captures Bonnie's spirit and life in a way that is poignant and filled with love. May the spirit of this wonderful woman live on in all who knew her. grace and peace, Cecil Charles Prescod, OCC

Spirit In Action -Bonnie Tinker - Love Makes A Family
Bonnie Tinker died last week while riding a bicycle on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. She was attending the annual Gathering of Friends held by Friends General Conference. More information can be found here. I saw her grow through her anger into the loving person you hear in this program, and which she described near the end of this program. She was faithful to her leadings -- the highest compliment one Quaker can pay to another.

Spirit In Action -The Local Eating Challenge - Ann Hippensteel
After reading "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" and "Plenty: One Man, One Woman, and a Raucous Year of Eating Locally," I particularly enjoyed Ann Hippensteel's 100 Mile Diet interview. My son did a video last year about eating local for a day in Virginia ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGy5r-2wiO8 ), and it's definitely possible! I'm hooked (well, except for coffee, but at least it's roasted in Virginia). Ann has really thought this through and has some great ideas. I challenge everyone to try this, even a very modified version of this -- like buying some of your food at a farmer's market -- and you'll feel so good, physically and spiritually.

Wow -- I was so touched by the interviews with those from Rwanda's Friends Peace House. How uplifting to hear of the wonderful work they do with children and with reconciliation as a result of the terrible atrocities there in 1994. I was moved to tears by the man who has not only forgiven those who killed members of his family, but is actually friends with those men. Incredible. Thanks for this eye-opening and heart-warming interview.

Song Of The Soul -Peter Phippen's Song of the Soul
I really enjoyed listened to Peter Phippen's music and his words spoken, he is truly gifted and and is in tune with all flutes he plays. I have had the pleasure meeting this amazing artist of wind that travels through many flutes and I can say it has been an honor for me to listen to his love in song. I totally agree with what he shared with giving everything away when making the music... that is the gift in receiving.. and I must say that most flute players are very gifted and play from their center the heart which is truly amazing. I thank you Mark from bringing Peter to the airwaves for us to hear his music and his words... I would LOVE to hear him again on your station. Good Music to you... Bernadette

This is the Peter I know. Brutally honest. The interview was meaningful and deep from within about different aspects of Peters life. I felt like I was in the room. I am enthralled with Peters music. Most amazing is his Blue Sunset which echoes the univeral rhythms I made in a painting from a blue sunset in Exuma. Yes, there are blue sunsets. Also Stevie Ray Vaughn also did not control his music and stated he felt his soul just was a receiver from universal rhythms. This is the hallmark of an artist, when their soul has a direct influence in their work.

Mark/Lou/Ann: Thanks so much for the idea and the professional job you did in reading the names of the 93 soldiers we've lost in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Listening to each of those names certainly gave all of our listeners a chance to pause and consider the toll of war. Again, it was a privilege to partner with each of you on this. Song Of The Soul -Peter Phippen's Song of the Soul
I have known Peter since I was 15 years old growing up with his daughter and attending the same high school. Peter and the rest of his family have taken me into there family. He is my "adopted father" and he has taught me not to listen but to feel music. Thats what he gives to his listens or should I say feelers. He gives his soul, his mind, all his energy in what he preforms. He said in this interview that he does force the music and it cant be duplicated. He can play the same notes, the same melody, but its never the same because everytime he plays he give you something different. I have so many memories of Peter playing during famuly gatherings and its not a party without Peter giving us some music. If you haven't listened to Peter before you owe it to yourself, to your soul to listen and relax. To become one with yourself. You wont be disappointed. Much Love, Jonas Gonstead

I found the show interesting but think that we need to dig much deeper. A few questions that need to be asked. Why is there an assumption that if god exists he must be good? What is the nature of good, is god the definition of good or is the definition of good something that goes far beyond whatever gods might exist.

Bobby Jo Toy is a refreshing voice for all women. I can't overstate her gifts of literacy, communication, and bringing women together. Thank you for empowering women by bringing them together in your unique manner, and providing life and job counseling. Also, thanks, Bobby Jo, for providing the Porter Place Building to be used for any type of gathering. The ambience of the space of your building, convenient and close to downtown, is incredible - full of solitude and serenity, despite the convenience of its location behind the downtown YMCA. Finally, as one may observe that several religious philosophies throughout our history have been used to suppress women, thank you for facilitating women working together, producing fruit, while accepting the diversity of their individual creeds, religion, or spiritual beliefs. Thanks, Bobby Jo A.Felton

This is a very interesting interview: Julie sounds very grounded in spite of (because of?) the wide variety of music that moves her and spiritual backgrounds. Although Julie said she was nervous, she didn't sound like it: Mark was especially skillful in his questions and ability to edit and flow in and out of the songs. 4 stars :) PS: Although this interview is from 06, I just heard it and just met Julie (briefly) this summer. Song Of The Soul -Ellen Bloom Ninneman's Song of the Soul
It was very interesting listening to Ellen describe her life struggles and her eventual spirituality that has transformed her into the wonderful person she is today. I met Ellen many, many years ago while attending college and had no idea the struggles she was going through with her religious upbringing and the guilt that came about because of it. I can tell you she had a definite impact on my life and I am a better person today for having known her. Hearing now what she had to go through and how she has survived and become an even stronger person doesn't surprise me one bit. I apologize if I in any way contributed to her struggles as I had no idea what she was going through - she hid it very well. While I only knew her for a short period of time, I am grateful that our paths crossed. The little time I was able to spend with her helped me to fight my own "demons" at the time as well. I wish only the best for her! Her positive beams of light were shining bright even in her worst times. Thanks for sharing your thoughts during this program.

Song Of The Soul -Julie (Hecksel) Patchouli's Song of the Soul
This story is told honestly – that, I think adds to the appeal of the 7 wonderfully crafted songs Julie shares with us. I got tripped up a bit when she talked about the origins of ‘The Day We Let Go’ and ‘Labyrinth’ – it’s hard to imagine that such a positive sprit as Julie’s could, or would every have to suffer. But realistically, I think the experiences she speaks of where necessary in order for her to create songs of this depth. It may have been her way of distancing herself from her troubles and losses. In a sense, I see her some of her songs as prayers. In particular, her writing ‘Labyrinth’ during that particularly difficult period of time she speaks of seems to have brought her closer to those she lost – much like prayers do for me.

Spirit In Action -Toward Taking Away the Occasion of Abortion - Rachel MacNair & Stan Becker
Dear Friends, No where in this interview did anyone mention Spirit, and how a woman is led to make her decision. As Quakers, we should be concerned that women are free and able to follow their spiritual leading about their conception/pregnancy.

Thank you so much for this considerate, thoughtful and thought-provoking conversation on a highly emotional subject. I hope we will begin to see more and more of this sensitivity and intelligence in the abortion debate, as there is healing needed here.

Dear Mark, Thank you so much for the information. I just bought the song, and it's the one (I think) from "The Essential Cris Williamson." A dear friend of my son's - a girl who lived with us for a while, and who is a sparkling and loving presence in the world - just lost her mother, and they used the song with a montage of photos. http://blip.tv/file/1005286 I'd never heard the song; it's lovely. You did well to use its name for your show. I subscribed to your show through it, and enjoyed listening. Be well, Kristen

I found your podcasts looking for other podcasts after much enjoying Speaking of Faith for the last month or so. I have already recommended you to friends - including Delle McCormick, current exec. director of Borderlinks. We have quite a few activist communities here in Tucson - some faith-based. The Sanctuary Movement started here in 1983 with John Fife (Presbyterian), Ricardo Elford (Catholic) and Jim Corbett (Quaker). I got into it in the later years after the 1986 trial until 1992 - when the peace accords were signed. And at sometime you would want to talk to Rick Ufford-Chase - sanctuary volunteer, founder of Borderlinks, youngest ever Moderator of the Presbyterian USA General Assembly, director of Pres. Peace Fellowship is leaving Tucson with his Quaker wife Kitty to go to Stony Point Center. You can read about it: http://www.stonypointcenter.org/ He wants to start an ecumenical peace order - had a general meeting to talk about it last week. I am enjoying the older episodes of both podcasts. Keep up the good work!

Spirit In Action -Judith Levine - Not Buying It: My Year Without Shopping
Judith was intelligently brilliant in her presentation and in her interview with you. I tried to detect something about faith and knowing in the Spirit, and she did mention breath and breathing. And if we manipulate language there it is. But she did have a very upside and "spiritual" impact on others-on me! Speaking of Spirit I hope after 5-6 months you will have Ruah Svennerfeld and Louis Cox on your program to be interviewed by you when they return from their 1400 mile walk from Vancover to San Diego visiting Friends Meetings in the genre of John Woolman. Song Of The Soul -Peter Alsop's Song of the Soul, PART TWO
Mark it was nice to read your news letter and listen to you and Peter Alsop immediately after vis via the www! As much as technology has divided us I do believe it brings us together spiritually with greater ease and the ability to cut through the chaffe. My five year old child came into the room while peace chickens were a cluckin and let out a burst of laughter at the same time understanding the message! Thank you both for inspiring him. Thank you both for renewing my spirit and hope in mankind that we do indeed some day park the evil tools we do posess and make it a better world for our children to live in. There are to many distractions that can lead us from that path of light and levity. I welcome those gifts along the way that keep us from falling off the edge. Keep your "spirit alive and strong my friend" the world needs you more than ever! -Blessing, Scott-

  A friend of Nora's
1/6/2008
Song Of The Soul -Nora Bates' Song of the Soul
I learned a lot about Nora I did not know before. Often while listening to the program I found myself crying, because I too have anger I often don't know what to do with, struggle with my belief/faith in God and the different churches' teachings, was married and am divorced, and am struggling to become a better person. Some days I feel like it's almost too long and too hard of a battle that I don't have the energy to fight and some days I'm much more enthusiastic and willing to do what I have to reach my goal of being a happier, more loving, kind, patient person. Today is a day I'm lonely and depressed (yes, I too have a so-called Mental Illness) and have little motivation to do much and don't feel very optimistic, but I have some hope I didn't have before and know "This Too Shall Pass" and like Nora feel there is some reason I'm where I am now and going through what I'm going through to reach a better place someday. I just wish it didn't take quite so long and was a little easier. I didn't rate this show, because I've never listened to any other ones, but it meant a lot to me personally and has caused me to really think a lot about what was said and the songs' messages. At first I thought I didn't want to take the time to listen to the whole thing, but knew I would talk that long to Nora on the phone or in person, if she was able to, about my difficulties, thoughts, wishes, hopes, dreams and want to know how she "understands" so much of me so well. I really do want to be a better person, but wonder how long it's going to take. The physical energy and endurance is not there today. I don't know what to do or who to call to help me today.

Song Of The Soul -Ellen Bloom Ninneman's Song of the Soul
I have known Ellen for 40 years. I am the other half of "The Singing Sisters" that she mentioned. I was truly touched, inspired, and overwhelmed by her openness to talk about her spirituality. I too was raised WELS like Ellen, in fact, in the same church and in the same small town, Ripon, WI. I can relate to Ellen's struggle to free herself from the constraints that WELS has put on her life. I have shared many experiences with Ellen in our 40 years but feel that I have really come to know who she is today by listening to her on Song Of The Soul. My struggle has been ongoing due to the fact that I have two children and a husband whom I wanted to at least experience the basis of my belief...that being their is one God and that Jesus Chris IS our Saviour. I do not believe in many other aspects of WELS and that is where my struggle and guilt come from. It is hard to break away from something you lived your whole life believing is right. I admire Ellen, and Bob, for their spirituality and the journey they have taken to reach the point of being content with who they are and what they believe. When I visit them in Eau Claire, I come away feeling at peace...if only for a short time. Ellen, you have given me new inspiration. It is time for me to break away from a religion that does not fit with who I truly am and what I was intended to be. For that, my dear friend, I love you. Thank you for sharing your spirituality with me and the others out there who may be struggling.

Song Of The Soul -Carlton Schreiner's Song of the Soul
First, I want to compliment you on the format of you program, "Song of the Soul." Dividing the time between songs and commentary between you and your guest is both interesting and entertaining. A song may have universal meaning to the listeners, which is why we want to hear it again and again. Knowing the story behind the composing of the lyrics adds new interpretations and appreciation. Getting to meet the songwriter, the producer, the singer, the arranger, and the instrumentalist, as in the case of Carlton Schreiner, is a rare privilege. His CD "Love is the Cure" can be a cure for many ills in this world. For me, the calming influence of his special arrangement of "Amazing Grace" has slowed down the pulse of my rapid and irregular heartbeat. The energizing rhythms of other songs makes me want to sing a long or to dance, while bringing a message of hope, love, joy, and peace.. Thank you for bring this king of programming to the airwaves and the Internet.

Song Of The Soul -Carlton Schreiner's Song of the Soul
'The world as a whole has forgotten the real meaning of the word "love". Love has been so abused and crucified by man that very few people know what true love is. Just as oil is present in every part of the olive, so love permeates every part of creation. But to define love is very difficult, for the same reason that words cannot fully describe the flavor of an orange. You have to taste the fruit to know its flavor. So with love. All of you have tasted love in some form in your hearts; therefore you know a little about what it is. But you have not understood how to develop love, how to purify and expand it into divine love. A spark of this divine love exists in most hearts in the beginning of life, but is usually lost, because man does not know how to cultivate it.' (Paramahansa Yogananda, 1943, from The Divine Romance) Lots of joy on the way – back home – to the Divine!

It is so rich and heartwarming to hear a man speak so eloquently and lovingly of his journey to depths and heights of soul, of how he nurtures the souls of his own children, and especially to know that the sons of our time are being raised to look deeper for what is truly important and most real. Mark's choice of music also paints a richly textured picure of a life honoring authentic soul in self and others. Thanks, Mark, for sharing an intriguing glimpse of your life, both movingly reverent and delightfully irreverent, along your way! Suggestion: Have Mark back for Father's Day.

Song Of The Soul -Helene Pollock's Song of the Soul
Helene said something like "if someone could listen to my music, then they might really know me". This idea spoke to me -- so many times we gravitate towards songs because they speak our feelings for us (at least I do) yet I'd never heard that truth expressed like that before. I'd never heard of John Michael Talbot; I'm glad for the mix of performers she wove into this interview. Thank you to Helene and to Northern Spirit for this piece.

Kathi's sensitivity comes through on her selection of songs. They sing of caring, political activism, and heart. Listening to Helene's sharing of her soul and the music that inspires her was a most uplifting experience. What touched me the most was her vulnerability and her willingness to share so deeply about her connection to God through music. I resonnated with that level of spirituality, being a liturgical musician with Medical Mission Sisters in Philadelphia, PA. Music sustains me on many different levels. Helene's spiritual journey is one that obviously is done with great care and loving. Thank you, Helene, for sharing yourself with us so fully! Thank you, Mark, for a wonderful program and I wish you all the luck in the future. Peace, Mary Anne

Song Of The Soul -Helene Pollock's Song of the Soul
Dear Mark, Just to say how I enjoyed listening to this program which I thought was “Music from the soul to the soul and talk from the deep mind to the mind”. I would also like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to know my friend Helene Pollock better and appreciate her keen understanding of the human mind through music of the heart. The songs were inspiring particularly ‘Cave of the Heart’ by John Michael Talbot and “Anointed” by Kathy Sherman. These 2 songs brought memories of my soul searching periods and set in me a wave of spiritual exuberance. I will refer to them in my lonesome search for peace and love in a world of much needed understanding and truth. As a Quaker from Lebanon having fled with my family the atrocities of the war of summer 2006 to the peace and compassion of Haverford College, Helene Pollock was a steady support for us in a period of anxiety and adaptation. I thank you dear Mark for giving me the opportunity to know Helene better and know where she is coming form. Please excuse my subjective comment. I wish you and your program continued progress in outreach and the spread of deep contentment of the soul. In Friendship Tony Manasseh

I have known and admired and loved Helene for years and had many deep and soulful conversations with her but I had no idea of this side of her personality and spirit. What a wonderful revelation! I was so impressed by the idea of your show that I invited my wife (who is a Methodist pastor) to listen in and suggested that this might be a meaningful and moving way to organize a worship sharing experience for music lovers. I think that Quakers might find this format to be spiritually enriching and will certainly recommend your show to Friends. Yours in peace and friendship, Anthony Manousos, Editor of Friends Bulletin

Song Of The Soul -Helene Pollock's Song of the Soul
What an amazing testimony! The songs truly did serve as commentary on the words. And Helene, while Mark did do an exceptional job of taking the pieces to create a wonderfully unified whole, you were the source of those pieces. Thank you for a deeply rewarding experience, one which transcended the usual quotation bits. Thank you for sharing this aspect of your life. It is obviously a well considered, intentional walk. An inspiration.

I was captivated by Jon's journey. He has a *presence* that really connects. What a deep and powerful person -- so *real*! I feel like I know him. It's great to meet new friends through music and a common spiritual connection.

Mark deserves a lot of credit for an excellent interview. He managed to make the various points hang together, and he especially highlighted *the music*, and that's what it's all about -- our experience of Divine Love, through music. Thank you Mark!

This was really a great show. It covered a wide range of perspectives in the music and the life of the interviewee, yet hung together extremely well. This was well worth listening to.

I really liked the variety of interviews (and music) that was included in this show. I was personally moved by the interviews with the bright and caring 14 year-old Lillian and her peace-committed father. Although I know it would be more work for you, Mark, it would be totally cool to have links from the segment text descriptions to that portion of the audio stream.

I have just finished listening to your program in its entirety. Kathi, thank you so much for your gift to our family as well as to the world. The music was wonderful, with artists Fred and I have never heard. Your words were enlightening and gave me a much better sense of you and your soul. You have always been an inspiration to me with your accomplishments throughout your life and times of difficulties. Your sons and the entire family are so much richer for having you as part of our lives, Peace and love, Mary Bliss

Song Of The Soul -Jon Watt's Song of the Soul
I listened to Mark's interview with Jon today. I don't know how I missed Jon at the Gathering 2007. What a spirit led and directed young man! His openness is astounding. What an example for young Quaker Friends. His hip-hop and Indie Rock is unobtrusive background music to the verbal messages. So much popular music emphasizes the music and the words are incidental and hard to hear. Jon has a depth and a breadth. He draws from images from his own life experiences with others, from his memories or from reading history and brings them to life, capturing the evolutionary nature and testimonies of early Quakerism with an active and alive imagination, bringing history to life. The song about his relationship with Tom Fox, a recent martyr to the War in Iraq, as a member of a Christian Peacemaker Team really immortalized Tom for me. I really did need to hear the CD, Mark as the wailing in the background brought a realism to the horror and grief of Tom's death. It brought chills to my body. I could really hear that the god in Tom is the god in Jon as his song created that oneness. It was a sensitively done interview as are all of Marks interviews on Northern Spirit Radio.

Spirit In Action -Marcus Borg, Author of Meeting Jesus Again For the First Time
Great show. I'm thinking about playing the show regularly on my community radio station. My only suggestion is finding a new theme song. It felt smaltzy and cheesing rather than dynamic, activist, and engaging. There are great religious songs. I would encourage you to seek them out and choose a better song--perhaps something like Sweet Honey in the Rock, but there are many other options.

Spirit In Action -Marcus Borg, Author of Meeting Jesus Again For the First Time
While I found Mr. Borg to be articulate and eloquent in his analysis of biblical elements, I missed the connections to everyday life (and the values I hold dear) that I have heard on other Spirit in Action programs.

Spirit In Action -Peterson Toscano - Ex-gay Survivor
What a refreshing and thoughtful perspective on one person's struggle and success to define his sexuality and spirituality! Technical notes: Mark's introductory comments about the purpose of the show seemed a bit wooden. There was also a real difference in the clarity through the guest's microphone (very clear) and Mark's microphone (kind of fuzzy). I would enjoy future programs that illustrate how others have found spiritual guidance through issues that are often rigidly defined by religious dogma, e.g., Catholicism and contraception, the religious right and war, Buddhism and political activity.

I really enjoyed listening to David talk about his journey, hearing his music, including my song, "Comfort's Sigh"....Yes! This was a heartwarming show. Your two voices were very calming, serene. It is a blessing you have this show! Thank you for having David on because he is an insightful, and wondrous, light in this world. I am so glad to know him. And your sharing him with others is fantastic... Keep spreading the word of others on their faith journeys. I would love to do your show someday, if you'd ever like to have a Christian musician/mom/humanitarian who is enjoying her journey, enjoying the criss-cross of meeting others, and eager to talk about God, and all the aspects and unknown and joys and fears of living on a spirit based path. God bless you! Gratefully, Sara

A note from the interviewed: Mark first asked me to consider sharing my story about a year ago. It took me that long to decide that yes, it was time. The preparation was meaningful and healing. The interview itself was affirming; it gave me a chance to speak of what is most important to me. Mark is a sensitive and respectful interviewer, his skills are just what are needed to make these interviews hold together and come alive. The service that Mark provides to our community with his Song of the Soul program is of great value. My prayer is that everyone who seeks good company on their soul journey will discover this treasure, for the good of all.

Song Of The Soul -Cyndi Bradbury's Song of the Soul
I am Cyndi's "Episcopalian sister"...she sent me the link and I very much enjoyed listening to your program, actually learning more about her through your questions and her answers, and enjoyed being entertained by her music. One anecdote about our family that came to my mind while listening involves one of our last family gatherings. Cyndi was playing her guitar and singing the Hank Williams song "I Saw the Light" and our "atheist" brother noticed that one of the bulbs in the dining room light fixture was out so he stood up and tightened the bulb and it lighted and we all rejoiced that Richard finally Saw the Light! You have an interesting concept for your program...making me think about which songs would represent my soul...I've started my list, but unlike Cyndi, would NEVER be asked to sing in public! I'll check back on other programs in the future. Kathi

Hello, I have left you a message on your voice mail, but I thought I would give you a better understanding of what we can do together in this email. I have a book, that is not for sale, that I should read to people about how each one of us need to be taught how we all can "fix" the problems we have currently. The way we fix these problems is with a different set of rules from our Maker, God. What I teach has nothing to do with religion. When we all realize that in America there are over 190 religions, just try to imagine "anyone" trying to make sense of 190 versions of what God has said to them. There is a simple answer to what we need to do, and that is what I would teach. I would like to speak with someone on the phone about that. What I would be teaching is not taught anywhere. One of the things I teach people to do is demonstrate to themselves they are a miracle from God, and I can prove that. Thank you for your time. I look forward to speaking with you. Spirit In Action -Dan Nerhaugen - Civic Engagement & Literacy
Listened to Dan Nerhaugen's interview via the internet. My first time listening to northern spirit and i was impressed. Yes, an informed and engaged citizenry seems likely to bring the best chances for securing life, liberty, and happiness in a democracy. I was glad to hear Dan and see the work he is doing. I visited his website as well. I appreciate this program for providing concrete examples of action: things I, my chldren, and others can use for inspiriation to move from thinking and complaining to doing. I was impressed that the host pressed Mr. N about his condemnation of television. Facile condemnations of TV are too easy. And a bias towards the benefits of reading is likewise too easy. Mr. N was led to clarify his position about TV by avoiding the question of content and describing instead the way TV steals time from people that could be devoted to civic engagement. Over my life I've developed a fair amount of skepticism about the general benefits of literacy. Despite being an avid reader of literary fiction and non-fiction, the last time i got politically involved it was due to an invitation from a high school educated neighbor with little time for reading but plenty of passion for a cause. I seem to find that skepticism and and critical thought are not necessarily linked to literacy. Nor, I imagine, is caring enough to get up and do something. Though for someone with the drive to get politically engaged, literacy may be a powerful tool. At any rate, enjoyed the show, and look forward to hearing more of them.

Spirit In Action -Dan Nerhaugen - Civic Engagement & Literacy
I heard the recent progam with Dan Nerhaugen, Civic Engagement & Literacy, and I was thrilled to hear the perspective of the connect between literacy and democracy. I was shocked, however, at the statistics he cited about the appalling lack of literacy in the US and the degree of apathy. For many years I have been a proponent of the "blow up your TV" idea because of the passivity I had witnessed in myself and others while watching TV. A life-long reader, I have encouraged and modeled reading, curiosity and civic involvement for my children. We have the power to change ourselves, which is a profound spiritual practice. Thank you for this program.

Having heard favorable comments and discussions about a few of the quest speakers and their interpolations of world events and circumstances, I find it almost imperative that I take the time to listen, or at least record some of these interviews. Listening over the internet also gives me a viable option to get tuned into what all the positive and sometimes unexpected reactions emanating from certain people is all about.

Mark, Thanks for the blessing of the unique mix of heart opening music and inspiring story that Spirit in Action is. A great balance to the negativity of our world. I can listen and let my heart and mind open and be nurtured. A good motivator to take time to listen on a regular basis especially since I can access the shows whenever I want on my computer while I'm way out of the broadcast range here in St. Paul.

Thank you for providing this program. It is a joy to hear of other's faith journeys and how music has either influenced that path or helped define it. This is one of those valuable programs that helps build understanding among community members. It also can provide insight and possible exploration into the listener's own faith journey.

Song Of The Soul -Jeremy Kadinger's Song of the Soul
Mark, Thank you for introducing us to Northern Spirit Radio. I listened to Jeremy Kadinger's Song of the Soul and enjoyed it thoroughly. His wide knowledge of and experience with music came through clearly, not only in that which he said but also in the songs he selected to play for the listening audience. In the process, I learned about musicians who are new to me, people whose albums I'd like to purchase, like the Five Blind Men of Mississippi or even the one by Johnny Cash with which I wasn't familiar. Your approach to him during the interview was so calm, so respectful, so incisive. I thank you for that. You didn't sound "preachy," but instead drew him out in a way that obviously called out his best. I will be tuning into Northern Spirit Radio often in the future.

Wow, I had no idea about this until a note from a F/friend encouraged me to check it out, saying it was great. What a wonderful line-up of speakers -- people doing wonderful, inspiring things, generating good news... and I really appreciate the links to the organizations and projects profiled. This is going to be my one-stop-shopping site for linking some of our homeschooling activities to real-life situations and opportunities. A truly horizon-expanding show! Thanks!

There is a real need for this service in these times. A voice of compassion and understanding that allows a variety of experiences to be heard and shared. The fact that it is available online to download allows free and unhindered access. Bring this on,Thanks Martin - Canberra, Australia

Spirit In Action -Bonnie Tinker - Love Makes A Family
Mark, thank you for the program on Bonnie Tinker. She is a wonderful woman with lots to teach us about how to communicate about lesbian and gay people. I truly admire her work on the radio, talking weekly with right-wing people about her life experience and listening carefully to them about their views and the sources of them. You do a service to the community in bringing such people to our homes and in crafting a lovely hour of music and commentary so that listening appeals to both heart and mind. Thanks again, Virginia

Spirit In Action -Chante Wolf - Veterans for Peace
I've just listened to your program about Chaunte Wolfe, and her experience in the military. I appreciate hearing the high-quality sensitive interview which Mark Judkins Helpsmeet conducted with her. Mark has a natural radio voice, and his empathy opens up those he interviews. Mark's questions are personal and probing, yet respectful. I look forward to hearing more of his work here in the Northern woods of Wisconsin. Thank you for bringing high quality, diverse programs to us.

I don't get a chance to hear this kind of programming anywhere. Having it available online makes it possible for people like us, living beyond most radio and TV signals, to participate in some way in the many spiritual paths discussed on this program. Peace, Willie

Hi Mark, As usual, your programs are of high quality. I especially have enjoyed listening to Song of the Soul on the internet, as we are too far away from the radio waves. Learning how your guests experience their spiritual lives and relationship to music and song is fascinating. Keep up the good work, the singing, the dancing ... with spirit!

Song Of The Soul -David Huber's Song of the Soul
I listened to the Song of the Soul, David Huber's selections. Excellent idea. I've always listened to music as essential to my spiritual journey. His selections by Zappa, Floyd, and Mahler were all particular favorites for me too. I remember listening to Zappa's 'outside now' late at night in a converted shed in the vines of Tuscany. and then wandering out past the little monastery to the cemetary. Floyd's 'pigs' was almost the soundtrack to my retreats in my tent at the foot of the Alps where they plunge into the mediterranean. Again. late at night, sitting on a massive boulder, the Alps behind, the Med below. Kevin

Dear Mark, I especially enjoy the Song of the Soul program of your radio station. In this day of constant conflict, intolerance and groups professing to "know the only right way", it is a pleasure to see the diversity of views expressed in Song of the Soul. Spirit is a broad concept and it is interesting to listen to how others path have led them to their present faith. Keep up the good work. In peace, Julie

Northern Spirit Radio's "Song Of The Soul" series is one of the most inspirational and thought-provoking shows, I've listened to -- BEST EVER in the religious genre -- uniquely developed and delivered without preaching or pomposity! Incredible format, fresh in approach and substance. Mark has found a way to touch souls in ways that reflect the diversity of humanity, in the most individual of ways -- through communication with individuals -- yet utilizing mass communication! The intimacy of the interviews combined with the music invites the listener to enter into the private world of the interviewee with a reverance seldom experienced in this time and day. The result is a wonderous experience!!! Thank you, Mark, for this gift........ you have a way of uncovering hidden paths through surprising landscapes of the soul and spirit.
