Spirit Afoot at the MREA's Energy & Sustainable Living Fair 2007 - Part 1

arial photo of the fair

The Midwest Renewable Energy Association Energy Fair is an amazing event, rich in speakers, workshops, vendors, music and more than 16,000 attenders. I went with an ear for the voice of the Spirit - and heard PLENTY. A collage of many folks who took part, as I roamed around the fair grounds on June 15-17, 2007.

In part 1 of 2, I visit with and listen to:

Dr. Helen Caldicott, one of the founders of Physicians for Social Responsibility and keynote speaker for Friday at the Energy Fair.

Dorothy Toy, a German-born American, who listened to Caldicott's presentation.

Aaron Miller, a 20-something who took part in the Peace Walk.

Bonnie Block of Wisconsin Network for Peace & Justice, the group who organized the Peace Walk.

Lillian Dypold, a 14-year old I met on the Peace Walk.

Douglas Dypold, father to Lillian - she was so interesting, I just had to talk to her dad, and the influence was clear and rich.

Bryce Black, exhibitor for LoTec Windmill Service - who shared a song he wrote for his son.

David Abazs of Round River Farm & Renewables and Shalom Seed Sanctuary who passed me off to two early teens, Yarrow and Anna.

Marguerite Ramlow of Artha Sustainable Living Center, a center for alternative energy consulting, a bed and breakfast, and a yoga retreat center.

Tom Newton with a visit to Anthony Courter of Solar Pathfinder.

Some music by Baba Ghanooj, an old Beatles tune, Revolution.

Audio file

Bonnie Block, among other things, is an ELCA Lutheran, and has worked with their Peace Fellowship. She talks about some of the Biblical basis she identifies, as a Lutheran, leading to her belief in pacifism.
One of the walkers on the Peace Walk was Bonnie Block, and she spoke of her 2005 visit to Iran - who, she says, is NOT our enemy.
I met Douglas Dypold as part of the Peace Walk, and he shared a bit of his experience in high school that led him to avoid the Vietnam War by heading to Sweden.
Bryce Black of LoTec Windmills has a mission - to preserve a tried-and-true technology and a part of Americas soul - an embodiment of an archetype in our spirit.
Bryce Back treated me to a song about his son, Christopher, and his future as a windmill man.

I really liked the variety of interviews (and music) that was included in this show. I was personally moved by the interviews with the bright and caring 14 year-old Lillian and her peace-committed father. Although I know it would be more work for you, Mark, it would be totally cool to have links from the segment text descriptions to that portion of the audio stream.
