Idris Phillips left this world in July 2022, and we remember him today with my interview with him from December 2017, although I also interviewed him again in person, along with Katie O'Neill, the summer of 2018. I was introduced to Idris by another Muslim, Dawud Wharnsby, and then learned that Idris was also nurtured in his music and recording by Yusuf Islam/Cat Stevens. Idris Phillips made superb music with wonderful artists for close to 40 years, and finally released his first CD, Star By Moon, in 2016, a recording emphasizing his folk roots, only one vein of his broad & deep talent with jazz, blues, and other musical styles. His guitar and keyboards are magic, and his lyrics triple-deep; in the listener's ear, in Idris' personal experience, and in the mystical truths they name.
